Retrofitting historic masonry buildings is a challenging undertaking. This presentation will focus on one of the biggest design challenges – how do we preserve the exterior masonry facade while improving the energy performance and indoor comfort? Attendees will learn about strategies to control the movement of heat, moisture and air using interior insulating approaches. Through a series of case studies, Ekaterina will present and discuss key challenges of the design and retrofit of solid masonry buildings as well as how durability concerns were addressed while meeting the demands of historical preservation.

Dr. Ekaterina Tzekova
Ekaterina oversees TAF’s TowerWise Retrofit program and manages TAF’s building energy efficiency projects
Her research interests include improving energy performance and durability with a focus on multi-unit residential and solid masonry buildings.
She has published and presented widely on topics related to sustainability, building energy performance, material durability, and indoor environmental comfort.
Ekaterina received her PhD in Civil Engineering at the University of Toronto. She is a guest lecturer at the University of Toronto and is a part-time instructor for the Building Science Certificate Program at the University of Toronto’s School of Continuing Studies.
