The ability to make informed decisions early in the design process is critical to reducing carbon in the built environment. Until now, building enclosure design has focused on the reduction of operational carbon consumption. The climate crisis is driving stricter building codes and regulations however successful zero operational carbon buildings have demonstrated that the impact of embodied carbon on total lifecycle carbon emissions is moving to the forefront. This creates an urgent need for a better understanding of embodied carbon by the AEC industry and for guidance on how to meet this new challenge. A joint study with RDH Building Science and Toronto Metropolitan University, funded by the Toronto Atmospheric Fund, seeks to quantify the embodied carbon intensity of commonly used envelope systems in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA). Using a standardized methodology for calculating CO2e emissions, embodied carbon metrics were established for 26 different enclosure assemblies. The resulting database and guide will inform design at the earliest stages, prior to the establishment of detailed design information, through the lens of embodied carbon, allowing designers to choose optimum enclosure designs that balance embodied and operational carbon emissions across the buildings life-cycle.

Rehanna is a building science engineer and project manager at RDH Building Science and has been in the building science field for over 7 years. She is a University of Toronto Civil Engineering alum with a specialization in building science, infrastructure for sustainable cities, and energy systems.
With her background in building enclosure design, she utilizes her expertise to ensure the integration of enclosure strategies, mechanical systems, and energy performance for high performing design solutions. Her work in the sustainability industry fuels her passion for developing infrastructure that creates and sustains livable communities in Canada.
She has led and consulted on a broad range of low carbon design projects from commercial and institutional to large-scale mixed-used buildings, considering both operational and embodied carbon consumption, while pursuing a variety of performance targets including Passive House and Zero Carbon Buildings.
