Wildfire Resilient Housing: Practical Design Strategies

April 22, 2026 12:00 PM - 01:00 PM

Wildfires are increasing in frequency and severity across Canada, with over 300,000 homes exposed to high wildfire risk each year. Post-disaster investigations consistently show that structural losses are driven by a small number of well-understood vulnerabilities in the built environment—particularly related to ember intrusion, radiant heat, and direct flame exposure—resulting from past and current construction practices. This presentation draws on recent research, testing, and case studies to examine how homes ignite and highlights practical design strategies, material choices, and construction approaches that can reduce wildfire risk in residential applications.
