Wildfire Resilient Housing: Practical Design Strategies

Post-disaster investigations consistently show that structural losses are driven by a small number of well-understood vulnerabilities in the built environment—particularly related to ember intrusion, radiant heat, and direct flame exposure—resulting from past and current construction practices. This presentation draws on recent research, testing, and case studies to examine how homes ignite and highlights practical design strategies, material choices, and construction approaches that can reduce wildfire risk in residential applications.

Lucas is a senior engineer with Natural Resources Canada. His primary focus is on supporting the home building and renovations industry’s transition to affordable and high-performance housing. Lucas hosts in-person engagements with regional housing industries across Canada to better understand their challenges and barriers, and uses these learning to develop and deliver resources, best practices, and education to advance housing in Canada.
